Winter Vacation Destinations

Winter is one of the harshest seasons. With temperatures as low as zero degrees Celsius (some even have below zero temperature), one should find time to relax and have fun. Some of the exciting activities to indulge when in a winter vacation include snowboarding, hiking, speed and figure skating, ice blocking, dogsled racing, curling, snowball fighting, ski jumping, ice sailing, mountain biking, ice hockey, camping, skiing, ice fishing, sleigh riding, backpacking and ice-glacier hunting.

Ski resorts are a very popular winter vacation destinations. Among the top rated ski resorts in the United State's are located in Aspen, Colorado, Breckenridge, Colorado, Bretton Woods, New Hamphire, Copper Mountain, Colorado, Crested Butte, Colorado: Club Med, Deer Valley, Utah, Northstar (Tahoe), California , Smugglers Notch, Vermont, Snowmass, Colorado, Sugarloaf, Maine, Sun Valley, Idaho, Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Telluride, Colorado, and Whister-Blackcomb, BC.
However, if you want some European flavors to your winter vacation, then try the ski resorts of Lillehammer, Norway (the site of the 1994 Winter Olympics), Kitzbühel, Austria (an Alpine town with miles of country trails), St. Moritz, Switzerland (houses the world-famous Sip an après-ski cafe fertig), Courchevel, France (home of the world's largest cable car), and Cortina d'Ampezzo (Turin), Italy (the host of the 2006 Winter Olympics).

Alaska's winter vacation experience, which only has about six hours of daylight, is a dream escapade for many vacationers. Known as the Land of the Midnight Sun, Alaska houses Mount McKinley; highly regarded as the tallest mountain in North America. Other winter vacation spots in Alaska are Chugach State Park, Matanuska-Susitna Valley and the Kenai Peninsula. The state's extreme weather also composes the famous Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights.
The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race is the most famous dog race in the world. It involves a 1,049-mile competition in the rigid Alaskan topography.
